RS4 is a new RuneScape MMORPG that Jagex is building in Unreal Engine. It is set in Gielinor in the Sixth Age and begins in Ashenfall, years after the events of RuneScape: Dragonwilds. Jagex revealed it at RuneFest 2026 and says it is still a few years away.
Does RS4 replace RuneScape, Old School or Dragonwilds?
No. Jagex is designing RS4 to run alongside RuneScape, Old School RuneScape and Dragonwilds as an independent game. Each of those games keeps its own team, roadmap and investment.
Where does RS4 begin?
In Ashenfall, the landmass north-east of Gielinor that players first explored in Dragonwilds. RS4 takes place years after the destruction of the Dragon Queen Kuldra, and Jagex plans to grow the world beyond Ashenfall into familiar places and new ones.
Will my RuneScape character carry over?
Jagex has not said. Platforms, accounts, membership, progression, combat, skills and a date to play are all still unannounced. Jagex plans to share more about the world, the game and how players can take part during 2027.
How is Jagex building it?
Jagex says integrity and permanent progression are central to RS4's design. It wants players involved from the start, sharing ideas, testing and giving feedback the way RuneScape and Old School are developed with their communities. Registering interest on Jagex's RS4 page is how to follow that development.
