RuneScape combat styles and encounter preparation

RuneScape has melee, ranged, magic and necromancy combat styles. A style name alone is not enough to choose an effective setup. Start with the actual weapon and ability requirements, then inspect the target's relevant defences and encounter conditions.

Keep the game rules separate

This guide concerns RuneScape, not Old School RuneScape. A similarly named weapon in the other game may have different bonuses, requirements and combat behavior. An Old School damage result should not be used as a RuneScape damage result.

The combat reference groups the available RuneScape abilities, prayers, familiar information and equipment context. Open an individual record to inspect its own style and requirements. Summing unrelated accuracy values or weapon speeds into a universal equipment score hides the information needed for a decision.

Prepare for a particular encounter

Check the boss reference for the held target and phase information. A weakness value is context for that target, not a promise that a style wins every encounter. Mechanics, available abilities and survivability can change the preparation you need.

Find the actual equipment item, follow its requirements and inspect how it is obtained. Materials for an upgrade belong in the RuneScape crafting planner, using RuneScape recipes rather than a same-name Old School item.

Treat incomplete comparisons carefully

A reference table does not simulate an ability rotation or your play. Unknown modifiers should remain unknown instead of being silently treated as zero. A useful future damage comparison needs the exact target and supported game mechanics; it cannot be justified by an arbitrary combined-power score.
